Block 2: Post-orogenic evolution(s)
Post-orogenic evolution of mountain belts
Presentation
Two main cases are addressed: « passive » mountain belt collapse and « active » extensional reactivation of mountain belts.
Block 2 scientific challenges are:
- To understand the possible post-orogenic fates of mountain belts and
- To link up the W-Mediterranean tectonics (i.e. slab roll-back/break-off, back-arc extension & oceanization) with the Pyrenean/Alpine/Betics orogens.
Considering the Orogen’s playground, two main cases can be addressed:
- « Passive » post-orogenic evolution: mostly recorded in the Central and Eastern Pyrenees, Orogenesis sensu stricto is not active anymore. However, seismicity is still significative and both surface/subsurface data is indicating differential vertical motions reponsible for formation of alteration surfaces subsequently faulted and uplifted. Transition to post-orogenic dynamic and post-orogenic lithospheric re-equilibration, closely linked with interacting climate and topographies, is still poorly understood.
- « Active » post-orogenic evolution: mostly recorded along eastern Pyrenees, Gulf of Lion and the Betic-Rif systems, orogens are overprinted by active extension related to back-arc settings coupled with Tethyan slab roll-back / break-off. This is under the scope of Block 2 to investigate the control of former orogenic cycle (inherited structures, composition, thermicity, subduction polarity…) on subsequent active extension tectonics and their related basins.
